Thought for Worship: “Forgiveness is a strange thing. It can sometimes be easier to forgive our enemies than our friends. It can be hardest of all to forgive the people we love.” Rev. Mister Fred Rogers

GATHERING

Prelude: How Great thou Art | arr. Hayes

Welcome

Call to Worship

Votum

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Amen

Opening Sentences

The Lord be with you.

And also with you!

God has given us this day.

God’s steadfast love endures forever.

God has gathered us in this place.

God’s steadfast love endures forever.

There are many places we could be, but God has brought us here.

God’s steadfast love endures forever.

Salutation

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

Amen.

*Hymn of Praise:  Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Faithful God,

We confess our faithlessness.

Our hearts are fickle,

our eyes wander,

and we trick ourselves into serving other gods.

We speak lies, accept lies, live lies,

destroying others and ourselves along the way.

Forgive our waywardness

and lead us back to you.

Embolden our trust in your faithfulness

and settle your truth in our hearts.

Silent Confession

Assurance of Pardon

God’s steadfast love endures forever.

Beyond the cross, beyond the grave, beyond our sin,

God’s steadfast love endures forever.

This is good news!

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

The Law of God: Matthew 22:37-40

*Gloria Patri | #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

*Commitment to Peace Keeping and Peace Seeking

One: May the peace of Christ be with you!

All: And also with you!

Share a sign of peace with one another. After sharing the peace, let us all sing together:

Together, by grace, we witness and work, remembering Jesus, in whom we grow strong. Together we serve in Spirit and truth, remembering love is the strength of our song.

THE WORD OF GOD

Children’s Message

who hunger and thirst for righteousness.

Sanctify us by your Word and Spirit

in the company of the faithful;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Silent Reflection

THE RESPONSE TO GOD

*Affirmation of Faith

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;  He descended to hell.  The third day he rose again from the dead.  He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.  From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Offering Comfort  Ye My People/Ev’ry Valley Shall Be Exalted (Messiah)  | Händel

Prayer of the People (ending with Lord’s Prayer)

Surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, we pray for the fulfillment of God’s promise, saying: In faith, O God, we seek your grace.

We pray for the church . . . Strip away our falsehood and evil and clothe us with your loving-kindness, a garment for the body of Christ.  In faith, O God, we seek your grace.

We pray for the world . . . Show us the vanity of our ways, toiling away for sinful, selfish gain. Turn our hearts to seek the common good.  In faith, O God, we seek your grace.

We pray for this community . . . Give shelter to refugees in our midst, those fleeing from disaster, persecution, or war. Help them find safety and peace among us. In faith, O God, we seek your grace.

We pray for loved ones . . . Remember your beloved children who are struggling and suffering this day. Take them in your arms and heal them.  (names read) In faith, O God, we seek your grace.

Strengthen us to run the race that is before us, laying aside the heavy burdens of sin and death and following the pioneer and perfecter of our faith: Jesus Christ, our crucified and risen Lord.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory forever. Amen.
