The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

July 10, 2022 | 10:00am

The Rev. David Kahler, Guest Preacher

Thought for Worship:

“Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”  - Matthew 7:9–11

Votum

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Amen

Opening Sentences

The Lord be with you.

And also with you!

I lift up my eyes to the hills.

From where does my help come?

My help comes from the Lord,

who made heaven and earth.

If you then, know how to give good gifts to your children,

how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

Amen.

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Lord, we are like sheep, and we get lost.

We forget the needs of our neighbors and

do not love you above all else.

We need you Jesus, not just to save us,

but to keep us on the right path.

Fill our lives anew, Holy Spirit.

In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.

Silent Confession

Assurance of Pardon

Hear the good news!  “As a father shows compassion to his children,

so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.”

Live in the sure hope of God’s promise in Christ Jesus our Lord

Thanks be to God!

The Law of God: Proverbs 3:5-6

*Gloria Patri | #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

*Commitment to Peace Keeping and Peace Seeking

One: May the peace of Christ be with you!

All: And also with you!

Share a sign of peace with one another. After sharing the peace, let us all sing together:

Together, by grace, we witness and work, remembering Jesus, in whom we grow strong. Together we serve in Spirit and truth, remembering love is the strength of our song.

Silent Reflection

THE RESPONSE TO GOD

*Affirmation of Faith

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;  He descended to hell.  The third day he rose again from the dead.  He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.  From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Offering Beautiful City

Prayer of the People (ending with Lord’s Prayer)

Father, you excite in us a childlike reverence for, and   confidence in You. We abandon any earthly conceptions of Your heavenly majesty, and we expect from Your almighty power all things necessary for our soul and body.

Grant us, first, to know You rightly, and to sanctify, glorify and praise You, in all Your works, in which Your power, wisdom, goodness, justice, mercy and truth, are clearly displayed; and further also, that we may so order and direct our whole lives, our thoughts, words and actions, that Your name may never be blasphemed, but rather honored and praised on our account.

Rule us so by Your word and Spirit, that we may submit ourselves more and more to You; preserve and increase Your church; destroy the works of the devil, and all violence which would exalt itself against You; and also all wicked counsels devised against Your holy word; till the full perfection of Your kingdom take place, wherein You shall be all in all.

Grant that we and all peoples may renounce our own will, and without murmuring obey Your will, which is only good; that every one may attend to, and perform the duties of his or her calling and place in life, as willingly and faithfully as the angels do in heaven.

Be pleased to provide us with all things necessary for the body, that we may thereby acknowledge You to be the only fountain of all good, and that neither our care nor industry, nor even Your gifts, can profit us without Your blessing; and therefore, that we may withdraw our trust from all creatures, and place it alone in You.

Be pleased for the sake of Christ’s blood, not to impute to us poor sinners, our transgressions, nor that depravity, which always cleaves to us; even as we feel this evidence of Your grace in us, that it is our firm resolution from the heart to forgive our neighbor.

Since we are so weak in sin, that we cannot stand a moment; and besides this, since our mortal enemies, the devil, the world, and our own sin within us, cease not to assault us, preserve and strengthen us by the power of Your Holy Spirit, that we may not be overcome in this spiritual warfare, but constantly and strenuously may resist our foes, till at last we obtain a complete victory.

All these we ask of You, because You, being our King and almighty, are willing and able to give us all good; and all this we pray that Your holy name, may be glorified forever, praying the prayer Jesus taught us,

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory forever. Amen.
