Pentecost Sunday

May 19, 2024 | 10:00am

Rev. Jeremy Campbell, Temporary Pastor | Larry J. Carey, Director of Music

Thought for Worship: What we need to understand is that when traditions become laws, rules, obligations and expectations others put on us that we don't want to fulfill, then they lose real meaning and steal the joy from our lives.  And if we're too religious, we won't be able to be led by the Holy Spirit and enjoy an intimate relationship with Him. | Joyce Meyer

 GATHERING

Welcome

Prelude Holy Spirit Breathe on Me | arr. Phillips

Call to Worship

Votum

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Amen

Opening Sentences

What a blessing!

We gather to listen and to discern God’s will.

What a fellowship!

We join together and share our testimony

in the presence of God.

Our delight in God will be our song of praise.

We come to worship God with our whole hearts.

Salutation

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

Amen.

Prayer of the Day

How can this be, wonder-working God?

You bring the gift of the Spirit to be with us.

Our Comforter, our Advocate.

Our Counselor, our Wisdom.

These are but a few of the names we give

as the Spirit speaks to our hearts.

We give you thanks
for the unending gifts of the Spirit.

How can this be,

that we have what we need when we need it?

You, O God, are one and all things to us,

and we raise our Hallelujahs. Amen.

*Hymn of Praise        Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us

Call to Confession

The Spirit of God helps us in our weakness, interceding with sighs too deep for words.                                                          Romans 8:26

Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin.

Prayer of Confession

O God, as your Spirit filled the church

on the first Pentecost day,

so fill this house of worship with your presence,

and fill us with your passion.

You are doing a new thing, actively moving in the world.

Forgive us when we act as if your stories have all been written.

You hear the prayers of every language

and call us to hear each other.

Forgive us when we act as if your Spirit

only spoke our native tongue.

Wash us in your grace, O God,

and illumine us with your fire.

Send us out to follow your spirit

and teach us to hear the prayers of all your people.

Assurance of Pardon

Hear the good news of God’s promise:

I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh.

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord

will be saved.                                                                                                      Acts 2:17, 21

In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

Thanks be to God.

 The Law of God:

*Gloria Patri | #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

*Commitment to Peace Keeping and Peace Seeking

One: May the peace of Christ be with you!

All: And also with you!

Share a sign of peace with one another. After sharing the peace, let us all sing together:

Together, by grace, we witness and work, remembering Jesus, in whom we grow strong. Together we serve in Spirit and truth, remembering love is the strength of our song.

THE WORD OF GOD

Anthem     O Love, How Deep,  How Broad, How High   | arr. Hopson

God of power and grace, fill us with the wisdom of your Word and the  understanding of your Spirit so that we may be your church: a people with dreams and visions at work in all the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O dry bones, hear the world of the Lord.                                Ezekiel 37:4

 First Reading: John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15

             Thanks be to God.

Silent Reflection

THE RESPONSE TO GOD

*Affirmation of Faith

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended to hell.  The third day he rose again from the dead.  He ascended to  heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.  From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Offering Send Down the Spirit  | Haugen/Hayes

Doxology

    Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise him all creatures here below;

Praise him above ye heavenly hosts;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen!

Prayer of Dedication

Prayer of  Thanksgiving and Intercession (ending with the Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the       Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory forever.   Amen.

Benediction

Congregational Response

On Pentecost they gathered quite early in the day,

A band of Christ’s disciples, to worship, sing and pray.

A mighty wind came blowing, filled all the swirling air,

And tongues of fire a glowing inspired each person there.

O Spirit, sent from heaven on that day long ago,

Rekindle faith among us in all life’s ebb and flow.

O give us ears to listen and tongues a flame with praise,

So folk of every nation glad songs of joy shall raise.
