Third Sunday after Epiphany

January 22, 2023 | 10:00am

Rev.  Lillian Hines, Guest Minister | Larry J. Carey, Director of Music

Thought for Worship: Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.  | Nehemiah 8:9

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Everlasting God, we confess our tiredness, our sense of overwhelm, the feeling of being burned out. We confess that this leads us to turn inward and care for ourselves first, while our neighbors in need still cry out. Help us, O God, to find ways of letting go of the worldly ways of our daily life that cause us to be sluggish and      invigorate us to care for the most vulnerable. Remind us, O God, of the example of Christ who took time to pray and rest, but went on to feed and heal and proclaim Your Good News. Renew our spirits, O God, to let go of what drags us down in the world we have       created, the world of empire, and instead live into Your reign on earth as it is in heaven, the beloved community of Christ Jesus our Lord, in which we are one body of many parts, but all in need of one another. Amen.

Silent Confession

Assurance of Pardon

God is our help, so why should we be afraid?

God keeps us safe, there is nothing to dread!
This is good news for all of us.
Sheltered in God's gracious heart of mercy
and love, we raise shouts of joy: thanks be

to God, we are forgiven!  Amen

 The Law of God Matthew 22:36-40

*Gloria Patri | #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

*Commitment to Peace Keeping and Peace Seeking

One: May the peace of Christ be with you!

All: And also with you!

Share a sign of peace with one another. After sharing the peace, let us all sing together:

Together, by grace, we witness and work, remembering Jesus, in whom we grow strong. Together we serve in Spirit and truth, remembering love is the strength of our song.

THE RESPONSE TO GOD

*Affirmation of Faith

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;  He descended to hell.  The third day he rose again from the dead.  He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.  From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Offering: The Lord is My Light | Burson

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise him all creatures here below;

Praise him above ye heavenly hosts;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen!

Prayer of Dedication

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession  (ending with Lord’s Prayer)

We approach God in prayer not as strangers, but as beloved children, baptized in Christ Jesus. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

As children of God, we pray for the church . . . Make us followers of Jesus and fishers of people,    proclaiming the nearness of your reign and demonstrating the good news of the gospel. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

As children of God, we pray for the earth . . . Teach us not to plunder the gifts of your creation,
but to share the bounty of the land with all
and preserve your blessings for coming generations. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

As children of God, we pray for all nations . . . Be the stronghold of the weak
and break the power of the oppressor.
Let those who cry for you see your face. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

As children of God, we pray for this community . . . Put an end to the divisions among us.
Make us one as you are one,
united in a common vision and purpose. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

As children of God, we pray for loved ones . . . Be their light and salvation;
shelter those who are in trouble
and protect them from all harm. (names read) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Holy One, as you are well pleased with Christ, help us to live in a way that will be pleasing to you. As you have called us to listen to Christ, help us to always heed his word and seek his will. These things we pray in the name of Jesus, your beloved Child, our Savior and Lord.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory forever. Amen.

SENDING

Hymn: Go Ye, Go Ye Into the World

Benediction

Go now, and live in the spirit of your baptism,
even when you are led into wild and hard places.
With repentance and trust, give yourselves to God,
and with fasting and prayer,
strengthen yourselves against the ways of the tempter.

And may God enfold you in tender and lasting love.
May Christ be beside you in times of struggle.
And may the Spirit guide you back to the path whenever you stray,

that you may keep the covenant.

We go in peace to love and serve the Lord,

In the name of Christ. Amen.
