Third Sunday after Pentecost

June 9, 2024 | 10:00am

Rev. Jeremy Campbell, Temporary Pastor | Larry J. Carey, Director of Music

Rev. Scott Nowack, Guest Preacher

Thought for Worship: “Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we must be saved by love. No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as it is from our standpoint. Therefore we must be saved by the final form of love which is forgiveness.” | Reinhold Niebuhr

 GATHERING

Welcome

Prelude Sunrise | Hegarty

Call to Worship

Votum

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Amen

Opening Sentences

We wait for you, O God,

more than those who watch for the morning.

We wait for your steadfast love,

more than those who watch for the morning.

We wait for you to lift the lowly,

more than those who watch for the morning.

We wait for your unexpected grace,

more than those who watch for the morning.

Let us sing of God’s holy ways,

the glory of the one for whom we wait.

Salutation

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Steadfast God,

you constantly surprise us

with unprecedented grace

and unexpected redemption,

forgiving us when we least deserve it,

showing love to those we most despise.

Enliven us to keep watch

for your love at work in those we demonize,

for your power in those we look down upon,

and for your deliverance from all the ways

that we try to make you conform

to the structures and systems we have built.

All this we pray through Jesus Christ,

who called us to a new way of being. Amen.

*Hymn of Praise        God of Grace and God of Glory

Call to Confession

It is only by the power of God

that we are able to stand against evil.

Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin.

Prayer of Confession

You have called us blessed, O God,

and washed us in the waters of grace.

You have called us a family, O God,

and bound us by the presence of your Spirit.

Forgive us, O Holy One,

when we try to forget that we belong to you:

when we bind ourselves to the illusion of independence,

the myth of supremacy,

or the fear of what might happen

if we placed our trust in something beyond ourselves.

Forgive us, O Holy One, and by your forgiveness,

free us from all that keeps us bound.

Assurance of Pardon

Now stand firm in your faith,

covered by the saving grace of God

and ready to proclaim the gospel of peace.

In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

Thanks be to God.

 The Law of God:

*Gloria Patri | #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

*Commitment to Peace Keeping and Peace Seeking

One: May the peace of Christ be with you!

All: And also with you!

Share a sign of peace with one another. After sharing the peace, let us all sing together:

Together, by grace, we witness and work, remembering Jesus, in whom we grow strong. Together we serve in Spirit and truth, remembering love is the strength of our song.

Silent Reflection

THE RESPONSE TO GOD

*Affirmation of Faith

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended to hell.  The third day he rose again from the dead.  He ascended to  heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.  From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Offering Song of the Redeemed    | Rogers

Doxology

    Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise him all creatures here below;

Praise him above ye heavenly hosts;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen!

Prayer of Dedication

Prayer of  Thanksgiving and Intercession (ending with the Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the  Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory forever.   Amen.

Congregational Response

Go to the world! Go into every place. Go live the word of God’s redeeming grace

Go seek God’s presence in each time and space.  Alleluia. Alleluia.

Go to the world! Go as the ones I send, for I am with you till the age shall end,

when all the hosts of glory cry “Amen!”  Alleluia. Alleluia.
